If you’re driving by the corner of South Park and Sackville Streets, you will see that downtown Halifax is starting to look very different! Demolition of the old CBC Radio building began in mid-February and the wrecking ball took its first swings on March 21. The building has now been completely torn down and the crews are clearing away the debris to prepare for excavation.

The full multi-use development will cover the old CBC and South Park YMCA sites. It will include a rental unit tower, a condominium tower that includes our new John W. Lindsay YMCA, retail and commercial spaces, and three levels of underground parking.

Excavation of the site is expected to begin in July 2016 and will be followed by the construction of the three underground parking levels for both of the buildings on the site. We expect the combined project to reach ground level by next fall.

Once at ground level, our development partner, Southwest Properties, will be starting with the rental unit tower on the south side. Once it is completed, construction will begin on the condominium tower and the new John W. Lindsay YMCA.

We expect a 15-month construction period for the new YMCA facility and look forward to opening in 2019. In the meantime, it’s exciting to see the activity happening on the site. We can’t wait to see the buildings start to take shape!
