“We’re going to be motivating each other and keeping each other going,” says Erin Legare. She and her coworker Donelda MacDonald are both running 6.1 kilometres in the second leg of the Killam Marathon Team Relay for their teams at the Scotiabank Blue Nose Marathon on Sunday, May 21st. They are on two of the three teams, totalling 22 employees, from Killam Apartment REIT running this year in support of the YMCA of Greater Halifax/Dartmouth.

Being part of the Blue Nose Marathon is one of the many healthy initiatives Killam has to support their employees. “It’s really great to work for a company that is so supportive of their employees’ health,” says Donelda. “We have a gym at the office, we have some fitness and yoga classes at lunch time and after work, and we have fresh fruit around the office every morning.” Another favourite health-focused activity for the team is Ugly Christmas Sweater Run – an annual event to get the office in the holiday spirit and help to counter the festive calories.

Training for the team relay at the Blue Nose Marathon has also become an office activity with some friendly competition. “We had a challenge among our staff groups for each to run a marathon over a two week period. As we trained, each kilometre we ran or walked counted towards our team total and the team with the most kilometres won a free lunch. My team won!” says Donelda, jokingly rubbing it in with Erin.

More than running for the fun of it this year, the Killam teams are running for an important cause – the YMCA. “We’re really happy to get behind a charity with the relay this year,” says Erin. “The Y does a lot for supporting kids and our community, so we’re happy to help.” Members of their team have reached out to their friends and family to sponsor them in the run. Erin jokes, “It hasn’t really been practical to fund raise in the office since about a third of us are running!”

Killam is matching the donations raised by staff dollar-for-dollar. With the matching program, Killam has already raised more than $2,700 for the YMCA. Huge thanks go out to the 22 Killam employees running in Sunday’s relay and to Killam for their support. Look for them on Sunday in their neon green YMCA shirts!

We are grateful for Killam’s pace-setting commitment to active and healthy lifestyles for their employees… and their dedication to raising funds for the YMCA this year. This year nearly nearly 100 immigrant youth will be able to  participate in the Blue Nose Youth Run and 5KM events because of our Blue Nose fund raisers. We couldn’t have done it without you Killam!
