Facing out toward the vista of Citadel Hill, at the corner of South Park and Sackville Streets, the JWL is 70,000 square feet of potential - for healthy activity, for belonging, and for community building - including:

  • Three pools and a state-of-the-art gym

  • Indoor walking/running/wheeling track
  • Four studios for classes and programming
  • Childminding centre to support parents and caregivers while they work out

A brand new, modern facility allows us to open with state-of-the-art safety features and procedures right from day one. Group Fitness Programs

HIIT - Get the ultimate workout with Interval Training! Challenge and improve your cardiovascular fitness, balance, core strength and muscular endurance in this dynamic, high-energy workout. You will participate in a variety of non-choreographed cardio and resistance intervals throughout the class.

Bootcamp - Meet your fitness goals with this multi-level bootcamp. Challenge your strength, endurance, balance, agility, coordination and speed with drills that include multiple options suited to your fitness level.

Core Strength - Don’t ignore your core! Challenge this important set of muscles in this dedicated core class. You will gain strength through a variety of exercises that work your abdominals, back muscles, glutes and more!

Gentle Fitness - Be gentle on your body while boosting your level of fitness! Improve your endurance, mobility and stability without the stress on your joints. This total body, low-impact workout combines resistance and balance exercises. Suitable for beginners and anyone requiring a modified program.

Full Body Strength - Boost your level of fitness and gain full body strength! Improve you muscle endurance, mobility and stability without the stress on your joints. This total body strengthening workout combines resistance and power. Suitable for all levels.

Hi/Lo - This class is high cardio but low impact. This means you are getting a great choreographed aerobic workout, but you get to control the intensity based on your fitness level. Hi/Lo gives participants the opportunity to perform manageable, low-impact movements between periods of high intensity.

Cycle - Up your cycling skills! Come prepared for a cardiovascular workout that emphasizes proper form, technique and safety. Challenge your endurance and stamina with hills, climbs, sprints and more on an indoor cycling bike. \

Yoga - Find your inner strength and balance as you de-stress in this calming class. You will improve your flexibility, strength, balance and body awareness through a series of breathing exercises and poses. You will finish the class feeling centered and rejuvenated.

Gentle Yoga - Find your inner strength and balance as you de-stress in this gentle calming class. You will improve your flexibility, strength, balance and body awareness through a series of breathing exercises and simple poses. You will finish the class feeling centered and rejuvenated.

Stretch & Relaxation - Lengthen your muscles and calm your mind in this serene class. You will work on stretching, relaxation and mindfulness, incorporating a variety of lengthening movements and calming techniques. This class is for all levels. *A minimum of 3 participants is required to run classes.*

Yogafit - YogaFit® is modern fitness yoga that intertwines fitness moves with basic yoga postures in a heat building and flowing sequence leading to relaxing stretches and a 10 minute rest.

Early Bird Fitness – Calling all the early birds out there! This 7am fitness class is a Halifax YMCA tradition dating back 30 years! Join this group for 2 days of strength training and 2 days of Cardio then stretch and relax on Friday’s with Yoga. This early morning fitness class is made for all levels and focuses on full body workouts. Circuit Training - Circuit training is a form of body conditioning that involves endurance training, resistance training, high-intensity aerobics, and exercises performed in a circuit, similar to High-intensity interval training. It targets strength building and muscular endurance.

Zumba – Listen to latin music while learning fast paced dance routines. All levels welcome! Make sure to arrive 5 minutes before the class begins.

Aquatics Centre Programs

Lane Swim: Increase your endurance and cardiovascular fitness at your own pace. Lane swimming is open to all participants who wish to swim lengths.

AquaFree: Enjoy the AquaFit music and use of equipment without following along with an instructor.  Allowing users to move at their own pace and using their own workout.

is a cardiovascular workout that incorporates the excitement and energy of dance. Zumba® fuses Latin rhythms and moves to create a dynamic, dance-based class. Instructors will give physical cues to movements, and members will learn routines and music over time and be able to anticipate upcoming moves.

is a triathlon inspired class that focuses on indoor cycling in the studio and running on the track or treadmills. Each week offers a different pattern of workout between the two disciplines to develop strength and endurance. At the end of this workout, your legs will feel like bricks!

This 9-week program is for members who are able to run for 30 minutes continuously. Hill and speed training, goal planning, increasing pace, race reparation and nutrition are examples of content included.
 
Learn to Run programs are typically held outdoors, rain or shine. There may be a few weeks of indoor track or treadmill work. Participants will be required to complete an outdoor waiver during their first program. Learn to Run programs are included in your membership and are offered in the spring and fall.

This 9-week program offers members new to running the opportunity to develop running skills in a supportive group environment. The goal is to progress participants through walk-run sequences to 30 minutes of continuous running.

uses a variety of stretches, basic yoga and pilates inspired movements to develop flexibility, balance and
coordination. This class incorporates stretches that can be performed from a seated position or on an exercise mat. Light
weight fitness equipment may also be incorporated to develop muscle strength.

is similar to Gentle Fit and provides participants with a variety of exercises that can be performed while sitting on a chair or on an exercise ball.

is designed to improve cardiovascular flow, range of motion, balance and strength to allow participants to complete daily movements with confidence. This class is ideal for those new to exercise, with joint problems or limited mobility. Gentle Fit will provide participants with a variety of exercises that can be performed while standing and does not include jumping.

is a cardiovascular class on indoor stationary bikes and is a great option for those who are new to cycling or have joint problems. The instructor uses music and cycling techniques to guide participants through a variety of
